Global Pistachio Market Overview
In value terms, pistachio production amounted to $4.4B in 2010 estimated in export prices. Over the period under review, the total output indicated moderate growth from 2007 to 2010: its value decreased at an average annual rate of -1.5% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2010 figures, pistachio production increased by +45.7% against 2008 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 with an increase of 36% y-o-y. In that year, global pistachio production reached its peak level and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.
The countries with the highest volumes of pistachio production in 2010 were the U.S. (237K tonnes), Iran (216K tonnes) and Turkey (128K tonnes), with a combined 81% share of global production.
From 2007 to 2010, the most notable rate of growth in terms of pistachio production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Turkey, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Global average pistachio yield stood at 1.4 tonne per ha in 2010, increasing by 27% against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2007 to 2010; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of 27% year-to-year. In that year, the average pistachio yield attained its peak level and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
Global pistachio harvested area amounted to 504K ha in 2010, rising by 2.2% against the previous year. In general, the pistachio harvested area, however, continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009 with an increase of 2.3% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to pistachio production reached its maximum at 563K ha in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2010, harvested area remained at a lower figure.
