Pacific Exploration and Production (formerly Pacific Rubiales Energy) has found a home in Colombia as a producer of heavy crude oil. The company does what its name says, focusing on heavy crude oil in Colombia's Llanos Basin. It is also involved in refining and coal mining. In 2007 Consolidated AGX Resources bought Rubiales Holdings. In 2008 the company merged with Pacific Stratus Energy Ltd to become Pacific Rubiales Energy. In 2012 and 2013 it acquired PetroMagdalena Energy and Petrominerales, both of which have assets in Colombia. To reflect its broadening reach, the company took its present name in 2015. Pacific Exploration and Production filed for and emerged from Chapter 15 bankruptcy protection in 2016.
