Description
The alpha and omega of Alpha Natural Resources is coal mining. One of the top coal producers in the US, the company produces steam and metallurgical coal at 19 active mines and 7 coal preparation plants, primarily in West Virginia and Kentucky. Alpha's sales are split between low-sulfur steam coal, used mainly for electricity generation, and metallurgical coal, used primarily to make coke -- a key component in the steelmaking process. The company produces about 84 million tons of coal per year. In April 2018, Alpha agreed to merge with Contura Energy Inc to create the largest US producer of met coal, reuniting the two companies that were split by the 2015 bankruptcy.
