Description
It has nothing to do with the real estate portfolio of a French avant garde film maker. Rather Coteau Properties mines more than 15 million tons of coal each year from its Freedom Mine in Beulah, North Dakota. It began production in 1983. Its coal is marketed through a partnership with the Dakota Coal Company, a subsidiary of Basin Electric. Customers primarily are electric utilities, though Coteau's coalalso goes to another Basin subsidiary, Dakota Gasification Company, which operates a coal gasification plant. The company is a part of NACCO Industries subsidiary The North American Coal Corporation.
