BNI Coal is the coal mining subsidiary of Minnesota-based utility company ALLETE and operates the Center Mine property in North Dakota.The companyproduces about4.5 million tons of coal annually, most of which is sold to the Minnkota Power Cooperative and the Square Butte electric generating facilities (the supply contracts are not set to expire until 2027). BNI Coal controls about 600 million tons in reserves.
