Copper is king for ASARCO. A subsidiary of diversified mining firm Grupo México, ASARCO (American Smelting and Refining Company) operates mining and copper smelting activities, primarily in the Southwestern US. Each year its mines produce from 350 million to 400 million pounds of copper, as well as silver and gold as by-products of copper production. It produces copper cathode, rod, and cake. The company's three mines and a 720,000 tons per year smelter are located in Arizona. It also operates a copper refinery with a 279.5 million pounds per year production capacity in Amarillo, Texas.
