Description
James River keeps the coal flowing. The company operates about 40 mines in Kentucky and West Virginia (in the Central Appalachian Basin) and Indiana (in the Illinois Basin) that produce more than 10 million tons of coal annually. Though a small percentage of the coal it sells comes from independent operators and third-party producers, the vast majority of James River's coal is produced from company-operated mines. It controls approximately 362.8 million tons of proved and probable reserves (92% in Appalachia). The company, which filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in mid-2014, sells its coal to power stations in the southern US and to steel producers around the world.
