Jönköping Municipality is an administrative division in Jönköping County, southern Sweden. Its seat is in the city of Jönköping. The municipality was formed on 1 January 1971 through the amalgamation of the cities of Jönköping, Huskvarna, and the surrounding rural municipalities of Jönköping, Bankeryd, Barnarp, Gränna, Ölmstad, Rogberga, Bottnaryd, Hässleby, Öggestorp, Lekeryd, Svennarum and Taberg. On 1 January 2019 the former municipalities of Mullsjö, Habo and Gnosjö merged into the municipality. The municipality has a total population of 141,372 (2022) and and an area of 2,757 square kilometres (1,064 square miles). The municipality is responsible for providing a wide range of public services to its residents, including healthcare, education, social services, and infrastructure. It also promotes economic development and cultural activities within the municipality. The municipality is governed by a municipal council, which is elected by the residents of the municipality every four years. The municipal council is responsible for setting the overall policies and priorities for the municipality. The municipality is also divided into several smaller districts, each of which has its own district council. The district councils are responsible for providing local services to the residents of their respective districts.
