Hapag-Lloyd is Germany's largest container liner shipping company and is one of the world's leading container liner shipping companies in terms of global market coverage. The shipping company operates a fleet in about 255 vessels and a shipping capacity of approximately 1.8 million TEU as well as 1.8 million containers with a capacity of 3.1 million TEU. The Line's routes link over 135 countries throughout Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa. The company traces its historical roots back to 1847 when the founding companies – Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft (Hapag) and North German Lloyd – put their first ships to sea carrying general cargo and passengers to New York. Majority of its sales were generated in Far East.
