Write this down: Italian papermaker Cartiere Burgo is one of Europe's largest paper producers, manufacturing about 3 million tons of paper a year. Cartiere Burgo heads the Burgo Group, a chain of companies that supply everything from plant services to electricity for the company. Paper -- including woodfree-coated, uncoated, specialty, packaging, and newsprint -- accounts for nearly 90% of group sales. Cartiere Burgo also makes chemical, wood, and de-inked pulp and sells the excess electricity it generates as a by-product of its production processes. Cartiere Burgo merged with competitor, the Marchi Group, in 2004, and Marchi holds 48% of the combined company.
