In the North East Siemens has a long and proud history and a proven track record of delivering major power generation projects. Siemens has a strong presence in the region operating two world class manufacturing facilities in Newcastle and is a major employer in the region. In Newcastle Siemens has been a major employer since 1883 at the C A Parsons works, where the steam turbine was invented by Sir Charles Parsons. This site now supplies some of the worlds leading power generation, defence and nuclear companies with components and systems designed and manufactured to the highest standards. Siemens is also a major supplier of complex systems and solutions for nuclear power stations under construction and in service worldwide. The Company also employs around 400 people on Tyneside working for Siemens Rail Automation which is at the forefront of innovation for the UK rail industry. The UK Rail Automation business has grown organically and through acquisition since the establishment of Advanced Rail Management (ARM) in 1995. The headquarters of ARM were originally in Swaveley, Derbyshire before transferring to new, purpose built offices in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne in 1999. Siemens Rail Automation now employs around 480 people in the UK. It is an established supplier to Network Rail but it also has a growing international customer base. It is a leading provider of integrated signalling and train control solutions that improve safety, provide increased capacity and reduce operating costs. These systems can be found in over 100 countries worldwide. At the Siemens Rail Automation test facility in Longbenton, Tyne and Wear, it performs a variety of dynamic testing ranging from basic component checks to fully integrated functional simulation using the latest in computer aided engineering (CAE) techniques. This technology allows the Company to offer its customers a fully optimized product that is tailored to their specific operating environment. Siemens Tyneside operations have global reach into markets both traditional and emerging, and manufactures one fifth of all Siemens powered turbines in the world. The site is an international centre of excellence for welding and metallurgy and offers a range of products and services for the international power generation market. The Newcastle manufacturing facility also leads Siemens global efforts in developing its H-Class heavy duty gas turbine for both traditional and renewable markets. The Newcastle operations also include a major manufacturing facility for gas and steam turbine blades with Siemens having invested £25m in the facility to increase capacity. The £18m Siemens Energy Service Centre also officially opened on Tyneside in 2012 a move that saw 230 jobs relocate to the North East from Lincoln. The Siemens Energy Services Centre will help support Siemens’ and its customers’ ambitions in the UK energy industry. It provides maintenance services with the focus on Siemens’ new build gas turbine fleet in the UK. The team also support other OEM energy technology, biomass plants, CHP plants / district heating and wind turbines. Siemens is supporting major projects nationally including the design of electrical systems for the new aircraft carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth. Siemens is also working with Scottish Power in the development of the UKs first Carbon Capture and Storage plant at Longannet Power Station in Fife, Scotland. In addition Siemens is a partner in a consortium that was chosen in 2012 to deliver the next generation of underground trains for London. The new Siemens trains for the Piccadilly Line will be manufactured at Siemens facility in Goole, Yorkshire. Siemens is a major partner in the Governments Industrial Strategy and a founder partner of the Northern Powerhouse initiative, which aims to create a powerhouse of the Northern economy and transform the UKs economic landscape. As the UK faces the key challenge of increasing energy prices, Siemens is working with all industries to transform our energy production and consumption. In June 2015, Siemens announced the creation of a new national headquarters in Frimley, Surrey. The company will invest £175m in the new site and will relocate around 1,200 employees, from locations such as London, Manchester, Bracknell and Camberley, over the next 5 years.
